7 DAYS
MACHAME ROUTE

The 7-day Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers a well-paced itinerary designed for better acclimatization, following a “climb high, sleep low” profile that improves summit success rates. Trekkers pass through diverse ecological zones from lush rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and arctic summit terrain before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. The 7-day version provides a balanced combination of scenic beauty, physical challenge, and altitude adaptation, making it ideal for climbers with good fitness seeking a safer and more enjoyable summit experience.

Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp

  • Elevation: 1,800m → 3,000m

  • Hiking time: 5–7 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

After registration at Machame Gate, you trek through dense rainforest with towering trees, moss, and possible monkey sightings. The trail can be muddy but is beautifully lush.

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp

  • Elevation: 3,000m → 3,840m

  • Hiking time: 4–6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

  • Elevation: 3,840m → 4,630m (Lava Tower) → 3,960m
